Saudi Power Tool Names — Local Terms, Technical Names & Prices

One tool, several names. A Saudi contractor asks for a «صاروخ» (saroukh, literally "rocket"), the invoice says "angle grinder", and the catalogue says Angle Grinder — all the same machine. The mismatch causes real purchasing errors: the wrong item ordered, a drill bit that will not fit the machine, a breaker bought where a rotary hammer was needed.

This glossary maps the spoken Saudi market terms to their technical and English names, with the actual price range at Ronix Saudi Arabia. Prices are current as of September 2026 and include VAT.

The four most common ordering mistakes

1. A rotary hammer and an impact drill are not the same machine

The difference is the hammering mechanism, not raw power. An impact drill generates its blow by two ridged discs rubbing together — fine for block, light concrete and intermittent use. A rotary hammer uses a pneumatic piston, delivering far higher impact energy with much less strain on the operator, which is what reinforced concrete and continuous work require.

Rule of thumb: if the hole is larger than 13 mm, or the work is daily in reinforced concrete, you need a rotary hammer. An impact drill in that role burns out within weeks.

2. An SDS bit will not fit an ordinary drill

The SDS shank is grooved so it locks straight into the hammer without a chuck. It cannot be fitted into a standard drill chuck, and the reverse is equally true. When ordering bits, specify the system: SDS-Plus for small and mid-size hammers, SDS-Max for heavy ones.

3. Grinders are specified in inches, not millimetres

The Saudi market trades in inches: 4" = 100 mm, 4.5" = 115, 5" = 125, 7" = 180, 9" = 230. The cutting disc must match the machine exactly — a larger disc will not mount, and a smaller one loses surface speed and wears out quickly.

4. A demolition hammer does not drill

A breaker hammers only, with no rotation, so it cannot drill at all. A rotary hammer does both. Buying a demolition hammer for drilling work is one of the most common and most expensive ordering errors.

Frequently asked questions

What is a "saroukh" (صاروخ) in Saudi tool terminology?

It is the everyday Saudi word for an angle grinder. The technical Arabic is «جلاخة زاوية». The word literally means "rocket" and refers to the tool's shape and speed, not to any specific brand.

What does "hammer" (هامر) mean in the Saudi market?

In Saudi usage «هامر» means a rotary hammer — an electric tool that drills concrete via the SDS system. It is sometimes also used loosely for a demolition hammer, so it is worth specifying «هامر دوّار» (rotary) or «هامر هدم» (demolition) when ordering.

What is "skroub" (سكروب)?

The Saudi market term for a screwdriver, borrowed from the English word. It covers both hand and electric screwdrivers; the electric one is usually called «سكروب جبس» because its most common use is fixing drywall.

What is the difference between بنطة, ريشة and لقمة?

All three mean a drill bit. «بنطة» and «ريشة» are the spoken terms, «لقمة» is the technical one. What actually matters is the type, not the name: HSS for metal, masonry for block and walls, SDS for rotary hammers.

How much does an angle grinder cost in Saudi Arabia?

At Ronix Saudi Arabia an angle grinder starts at SAR 139 for the small sizes (115–125 mm) and reaches SAR 799 for larger, higher-powered models. Prices include VAT and carry 2 Years Warranty.

What is the difference between SDS-Plus and SDS-Max?

They are two different, non-interchangeable mounting systems. SDS-Plus has a 10 mm shank for hammers up to roughly 4 kg; SDS-Max has an 18 mm shank for heavy hammers. Bits must be ordered by system, not by diameter alone.
