Rotary Hammer vs Impact Drill — What's the Difference? (Saudi Guide)
Share
This is the most common question when buying drilling tools in Saudi Arabia, and the most expensive mistake to get wrong. The difference is not power — it is the hammering mechanism. Buy the wrong one and you pay twice: once at purchase, and again when the machine burns out early.
The difference in one line
An impact drill («شنيور دقّاق») generates its blow by two ridged discs rubbing together. A rotary hammer («هامر» / «شاكوش دوّار») uses a pneumatic piston that strikes the bit directly. The result: tens of times more impact energy, with far less effort from the operator.
| Impact drill | Rotary hammer | |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Two ridged discs | Pneumatic piston |
| Impact energy | Low — measured in blows per minute | High — measured in joules |
| Bit mounting | Standard chuck (round shank) | SDS (grooved shank) |
| Suited material | Block, brick, light concrete, wood, steel | Reinforced concrete, stone, foundations |
| Practical max hole | 13 mm | 26–48 mm |
| Operator effort | High — you supply the force | Low — the machine works |
| Price range | SAR 159–819 | SAR 259–2,719 |
Three questions that settle it
- Hole diameter? Over 13 mm → rotary hammer.
- Material? Reinforced concrete → rotary hammer. Block, brick, wood → an impact drill is enough.
- How many holes a day? Continuous work → rotary hammer. Occasional → impact drill.
In short: an impact drill is for occasional concrete drilling, not daily concrete work. Used daily in reinforced concrete it burns its windings within weeks, wrecks the chuck, and exhausts the operator because all the force comes from them.
The third tool: the demolition hammer
A demolition hammer («شاكوش هدم») hammers only, with no rotation — it does not drill at all. It breaks and demolishes.
- Need holes → rotary hammer
- Need breaking only → demolition hammer
- Need both → a rotary hammer in hammer-only mode, or two separate tools for heavy work

Joules: the number to read
A rotary hammer's impact energy is measured in joules, and it is the real indicator of penetration — more meaningful than wattage. Watts tell you how big the motor is; joules tell you how much actually reaches the bit.
Frequently asked questions
Can an impact drill drill concrete?
Yes — in light concrete, at small diameters, occasionally. In reinforced concrete or above 13 mm, the correct tool is a rotary hammer.
Do rotary hammer bits fit an impact drill?
No. SDS bits have a grooved shank that locks into the hammer directly; an impact drill uses a chuck that grips a round shank. The two systems are not interchangeable.
What is the difference between a rotary hammer and a demolition hammer?
A rotary hammer rotates and hammers, so it drills and breaks. A demolition hammer only hammers, so it breaks but cannot drill.
How much does a rotary hammer cost in Saudi Arabia?
From SAR 259 for an 850 W, 26 mm machine up to SAR 2,719 for the 1350 W, 48 mm model. Most contractors buy between SAR 339 and 629.
Corded or cordless rotary hammer?
Corded gives more energy for less money and runs continuously. Cordless suits sites without power and work on roofs and scaffolding. For sustained concrete work, corded remains the right choice.
What do SDS-Plus and SDS-Max mean?
Two non-interchangeable mounting systems. SDS-Plus has a 10 mm shank for hammers up to about 4 kg; SDS-Max has an 18 mm shank for heavy hammers. Order bits by system, not diameter alone.
